Some private colleges have four intakes in a year. English courses start throughout the year. From applying for admission to getting the visa its is 4 - 5 months process. To be on safe side, you should apply at least 5 months prior to your course commencement date. The university students should apply 6 - 7 months before the course start date.

Visa

International students require a student visa in order to study in Australia. The process of applying for a student visa depends on which country you apply from and the type of study you're applying for. Usually, the main visa requirements are: an IELTS band 5.5 for undergraduate and 6.5 for postgraduate courses, good academic background related to your chosen course with any gaps justified and proof of financial ability to support yourself during studies. From 2012, the Australian visa success rate has a declining trend. Especially in the high risk countries the visa success rate is on the decline in the past 5 years. The visa success rates not only changes from country to country but also according to the visa classes. You can more visa details here.

Where to study:

Australia has 37 government-funded universities and two private universities, as well as a number of other specialist institutions that provide approved courses at the higher education level.

There is a state-based system of vocational training, known as TAFE. However  due to very high admission criteria, students willing to do non-degree undergraduate courses, prefer to study at private colleges. However, for those willing to do a degree course, the main choice is obviously a university.

Admission Requirements

To be accepted to study on a student visa in Australia you will need to demonstrate a sufficient level of English language proficiency, and meet minimum academic requirements.

English language skills are a requirement for receiving an Australian student visa. IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge (CAE) and Pearson (PTE) test results are accepted by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) for visa purposes. If your English language proficiency score is not high enough, you can enrol in an English language course to prepare you for further study, though this decreases your visa chances. Ususally, IELTS band 5.5 is required for undergraduate and vocational courses whereas 6.5 is required for postgraduate courses. Other above-referred tests may be accepted.
